Understanding Home Solar Panel Grants

In 2025, the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI) are offering homeowners grants of up to €1,800 for a PV Solar Panel Installation.

The purpose of the grant is to support homeowners in installing solar panels and make solar energy more accessible and affordable for residential properties. In turn, these Homeowner Solar Energy Grants will assist the country in the transition to sustainable energy and Ireland’s renewable energy goals outlined in the nation’s Climate Action Plan.

Homeowner Eligibility Criteria: Who is eligible for SEAI grant?

The specific eligibility requirements for homeowners to qualify for the SEAI Solar PV Grant are as follows:

  • The property where the solar PV system is installed must be a private residence.
  • The applicant must be the homeowner (this includes landlords).
  • The property must have been built and occupied by 31st of December 2020. The construction date of your home is determined by the installation date of your electricity meter.
  • Each property can only claim the PV solar grant once and cannot re-apply for solar PV funding at the same Meter Point Reference Number (MPRN).
  • Use an SEAI registered solar company (Solar Home are SEAI-registered).
  • Use newly fitted materials and products that meet the SEAI’s required standards.
  • Obtain a BER assessment once the work is completed using a BER assessor from SEAI’s National Register.

Step-by-Step Guide to Apply for the Home Solar Panel Grants

The application process for the SEAI Solar PV Grant is straightforward, and typically approved very quickly (by email within minutes). Getting approved requires the following steps:

1

Pick your Solar Installation Company
Ensure your solar installer is SEAI-registered in order to be eligible for the SEAI solar grant.

2

Submit your Solar PV Grant Application
Before the installation begins, make sure you apply on the SEAI website for the solar electricity grant. Applications must be submitted by private individuals and not by companies or contractors, although Solar Home is here to guide you.

3

Install your PV Solar Panels
Install and “commission” your solar panels (commission is just a fancy term to describe the act of running standard tests and turning your new system on).

4

Complete Paperwork (Including new BER certificate)
As soon as your system is up and running, we can send the paperwork to SEAI to confirm that we, an SEAI registered solar installer, have fitted your system. You will need a post-works BER certificate with your improved building energy rating. Solar Home can arrange for the post-installation BER assessment on your behalf

5

Receive your Grant Payment
Allow up to 6 weeks for receipt of payment into your account.

You will need the following information to apply:

1. MPRN (Meter Point Reference Number): This number appears on your electricity bill and is 11 digits long.
2. Construction Year: The year your house was built and occupied (must be before 1st January 2021).
3. Your Solar Installer: Note they must be SEAI-registered (ie., Solar Home).
4. System Size: Details of the system to be installed ((kWp).
5. Contact Details: Your contact email address.
